Music as Medicine: A Review and Historical Perspective

Abstract:
Music is one of the oldest tools in medicine, with a longstanding history across time and cultures. Music has been used in not only medical, including pain, management but also to facilitate mental health and well-being, and music’s reach has ranged from practical to spiritual/cultural realms. This article provides a historical account of music in medicine and provides a brief summary of current understanding of neural underpinnings of musical perception and experience.
